In the U.S., the Department of Transportation (DoT) requires all commercial trucks to be equipped with a truck reverse camera. However, this regulation only applies to new trucks; many older trucks on the road do not have these cameras.

Commercial trucks must comply with strict safety regulations, one of the most important being the installation of reverse cameras. These cameras are mandated by the DoT to enhance safety when reversing and reduce the likelihood of accidents.

YUWEI replaces traditional rearview mirrors in buses and trucks with fully integrated HD external cameras and in-cab monitors, expanding visibility and improving the driver’s experience for safer vehicle operation.

HGV camera systems help drivers detect blind spots and provide reversing assistance by displaying everything within the camera's field of view, including people or obstacles, in real time on the monitor.

How Does a Truck Camera Work?

Most truck cameras are powered by the vehicle’s electrical system, ensuring they have a stable power supply and can operate reliably without the need for frequent battery replacements. The cameras are typically set to start recording automatically when the vehicle is ignited, ensuring recording begins as soon as the truck is in use.

Dash cameras often have additional features to enhance their functionality. Many such cameras come with standby settings, allowing them to record video even when the vehicle is parked (for up to 24 hours). This feature is particularly useful if the truck is hit or vandalized while unattended. If the dash camera detects motion or significant vibration, it will start recording to capture any incidents that occur.

The recorded footage or audio (some driver-facing dash cameras may record in-cab audio) is typically stored on removable storage cards, hard drives, or cloud storage platforms. Most modern truck camera solutions come with various storage options to ensure that critical data is not lost. Additionally, these camera systems may include features like loop recording, which overwrites the oldest footage once storage capacity is reached, allowing for continuous recording without manual intervention.
