Blind Spot Detection System for Trucks

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, a total of 4,764 people died in large truck accidents in 2022. Of these fatalities:

  • 17% were truck occupants,

  • 66% were occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles,

  • 16% were pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorcyclists.

The number of fatalities in large truck accidents in 2022 was 51% higherthan in 2009, which marked the lowest level since fatal crash data collection began in 1975. The number of truck occupant deaths was 83% higherthan in 2009.

Clearly, reducing fatalities caused by large trucks is a critical issue directly affecting everyone’s safety.

Blind Spot Risks

There are many factors contributing to large truck accidents, but blind spotsare a leading cause of serious safety incidents. Due to their size, large trucks typically have extensive blind spots.

Blind spot risks are particularly acute when turning:

  • For trucks with right-hand cabs, drivers may not fully perceive their left sidewhen turning left.

  • For left-hand cabs, visibility is limited on the right sideduring right turns.

To enhance road safety and build safer, more prosperous urban environments, YUWEIhas launched an AI-powered blind spot detection system, aimed at maximizing protection for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.

Technical Features

YUWEI’s BSD system integrates machine visionand AI technology. It uses cameras to capture blind spot areas and calculates risk zones via visual distance measurement. It then identifies vulnerable road users (VRUs)—such as pedestrians, scooter riders, cyclists, and motorcyclists—using body and object recognition algorithms.

The system delivers visual and audible alertsto warn both drivers and VRUs, preventing accidents proactively.

Additional features include:

  • CMS (Camera Monitoring System)with 1080P HD cameras, providing high-quality video feeds to assist drivers with precise situational awareness.

  • Customization servicesfor hardware and software, tailored to client requirements.

System Components

The YUWEI BSD System consists of:

  • AI-powered DVR (supports BSD algorithms)

  • BSD Cameras (up to 4 channels, configurable based on customer needs)

  • Monitor

  • Audio-visual alarm unit

  • Speaker

  • Relevant accessories

Installation Locations

Installation locations can be freely chosen based on specific vehicle configurations. Below is a sample diagram for Cab-Over-Engine (COE)models, provided for reference only.

System Capabilities

The YUWEI BSD system supports 8-directional VRU detection and alerts, complying with regulatory standards for aftermarket installations such as:

  • CMS, MOIS, and BSISunder DVS PSS

  • UNECE R151 (BSIS)and UNECE R159 (MOIS)

When retrofitted on HGV/LGV vehicles, the system delivers performance equivalent to that required by EU regulations, significantly improving visibility limitations.

For COE vehicles with left-hand cabs, the system effectively identifies VRUs with 96% accuracy, issuing real-time voice alerts to help maintain a safe distance during turns.

The system also offers:

  • Open integration portsfor third-party fleet management platforms

  • Real-time alarm data uploads

  • Live video streamingand GPS tracking

  • Optional modules for monitoring tire pressure, fuel usage, and more

All data can be uploaded to fleet software platforms, enhancing management efficiency.

Note:For Cab-Behind-Engine (CBE)trucks, which have longer hoods and larger frontal blind spots, camera-based BSD systems are less effective. Sensor-based solutions are more common in this segment. If you require such solutions, please contact us directly.

Application Scenarios

The BSD system is suitable for a wide range of vehicles with poor direct visibility, including:

  • Heavy-duty trucks

  • Trailers

  • Large buses

  • Refrigerated trucks

  • Tankers

  • Mining trucks

These vehicles tend to have long bodies or high driver seating, making it difficult to rely solely on mirrors or visual cues. Accidents involving such vehicles are often extremely destructive due to their mass.

Custom Solutions

YUWEI has an in-house R&D team, offering:

  • Flexible combinations of DVRs and camera hardware

  • Custom software features

  • Seamless integration with third-party fleet management platforms

  • Multilingual voice alerts to support localization for various regions

We can design a fully tailored solution based on your specific needs.
